AR21-03 Jurassic Coastal Cruise
A fantastic coastal voyage from the Solent, along the ever-changing Jurassic Coast to Falmouth Harbour in the heart of Cornwall
Adventure Summary
Join us aboard the Amelie Rose as we set sail from the Beaulieu River to head along the stunning Jurassic Coast of Dorset and Devon to Falmouth in the heart of Cornwall. This coastline is constantly changing, from the limestone of of Dorset, through the red sandstone of the Devon Coast, and on to the granite of Cornwall, and you’ll get to watch it all slide by from the secure deck of a stunning Pilot Cutter.
From Hurst Narrows in the East you’ll be passing some of the most famous headlands and tidal races of the South Coast; Anvil Point, St Albans Head, the notorious Portland Bill, Start Point, and Prawle Point will bring you to Berry Head, and finally to Dodman Point in a catalogue of navigational challenges and mileposts that Amelie Rose knows so well.
This is also a fabulous way to build your sea-miles under the watchful eye of a professional skipper/instructor, or you can simply just enjoy the experience of a longer voyage aboard the Amelie Rose. There are tons of interesting harbours and anchorages to visit along the way and this run along the coast has consistently been one of the most enjoyable voyages of our previous seasons.
Itinerary
You’ll join us at Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu River on Saturday evening, where you can enjoy a meal at the Master Builders Hotel and meet the other guest crew. With food and introductions complete we’ll move to the boat where you’ll find yourself a bunk, stow your gear and have a look around. Before we head to our beds we’ll usually have a chat about the plan for the following day.
Depending on the times of the tides at Hurst Narrows and St Albans Head we may have an early start or the morning may be fairly relaxed, but either way we’ll eventually head downriver and out into the Western Solent. The first day will likely see us bound for either Yarmouth, Studland Bay or Weymouth depending on the weather and tides. The rest of the route will be even more flexible but typical destinations include; Dartmouth, Salcombe, The Yealm, Plymouth & Cawsand Bay, Fowey and the Helford River.
There may be some night-sailing involved and almost certainly a night or two at anchor as well as harbour visits. We’ll be aiming to be close to Falmouth by Friday night (possibly in the Helford River). This will leave just a short hop to get you ashore in Falmouth with plenty of time to extract yourself from Cornwall on Saturday.
